Oil Exploration and Development in Southeast Saskatchewan
- First recorded drilling was at Wilcox 9-24-13-20 W2M in 1907 to a depth of 442 metres.
- First significant drilling was by a subsidiary of Imperial Oil in 1942 called Radville No. 1 16-36-5-19 W2M to a depth of
2426 metres.
- First oil production came in October, 1952, from the well Tidewater Imperial Wapella 9-33-14-1 W2M from the Jurassic/Cretaceous formation at 700 m.
- First Mississippian formation oil production came from the well central Leduc Oil Hoffer 5-30-1-15 W2M in January, 1953.
- First unit was the Alida Unit formed on December 1, 1957
- First waterflood was the Steelman Unit I which commenced injection in September, 1958.
- First gas plant was the Steelman Gas Plant which commenced operation in 1958.
- First horizontal well was Shell Midale U EOR Hzntl C9-23-6-11 W2M with a finished drilling date of July 14, 1989.
- The deepest well was Home Dome Torquay 3-8-1-11 W2M drilled in 1985 to 3394.9 metres
- The longest well was Oklahoma Continental Resources (OCRI) Lake Alma HZ 1A3-24-3C15-23-1-17 W2M drilled in 2004 to 4800 meters.
- The most productive well to date has been Imperial Tidewater Queensdale 4-10-6-34 W1M
which produced 413,324 cubic meters of oil to September 30, 2004
- The highest oil production rate recorded was from Sceptre Gainsborough N. HZ C5-5-A3-5-3-30 W1M at 10,194 cubic metres per
month or 329 cubic metres per day in May 1990.
- The drilling record was set in 1997 with 1224 wells drilled.
- The oil production record was set in 1997 with 9,814,045 cubic meters
- The cumulative production to September 30, 2004 was 323,570,383 cubic meters of oil.
- The total number of wells drilled in the area to the end of 2004 was 24,826.
- The total number of active oil producing wells as of September 2004 was 8,341.
- First injection of CO2 for a commercial project was in September 2000, by Pan Canadian Petroleum in the Weyburn Midale unit.
- Apache Canada plans to spend $100 Million on C02 Expansion for Midale Field in SE Saskatchewan.
